Who can enter Dubrovnik’s restricted zone, how to register a vehicle, and where to park?

Dubrovnik’s new traffic rules for Old Town

Planning to visit Dubrovnik by car this summer? If you’re heading toward the iconic Dubrovnik Old Town, there’s an important update you should know. As of June 2nd, 2025, the city of Dubrovnik has introduced a special traffic regulation zone around the historic center to reduce congestion and protect its UNESCO-listed streets.

Here’s everything you need to know to avoid surprises and enjoy a smooth visit to Dubrovnik Old Town!

What does this new traffic rule mean?

The area around Dubrovnik’s Old Town is now a restricted traffic zone. That means only approved vehicles can enter, and there are no exceptions. The aim is to reduce pollution, traffic jams, and noise, especially during the busy summer season. If you’re planning to drive near the Old City, this new rule will directly affect your route and parking options.

Which streets are now restricted?

The restricted zone includes the streets surrounding Dubrovnik’s Old City, from Ilijina Glavica through Zagrebačka and Viktorija, across the areas of Pile to Boninovo. Clear signs, traffic lights, and warning screens are now in place to guide drivers and prevent unregistered access.

Can I drive to my hotel or apartment inside the restricted zone?

You are allowed to drive into the restricted area if:

  • You’re staying at a hotel inside the zone.
  • Your apartment includes private garage parking, and your host registers your license plate.
  • You have a pre-booked parking space via the Dubrovnik City Official Website at the parking lots below the Dubrovnik Cable Car and on Pile.
  • You’re arriving in a tourist minivan or bus (7+1 seats or more) with a registered stop via Dubrovnik City Bus Web Shop.

If your license plate isn’t registered, you won’t be allowed in.

How to register your vehicle?

It is quick and free, but it must be done before arrival. Go on the Dubrovnik City Official Website to submit your vehicle details. You will need:

  • Your name and contact info
  • Your license plate number
  • A confirmation from your hotel or parking reservation

Once approved, the system will recognize your license plate at checkpoints and let you through automatically.

Didn’t reserve a parking spot on time? Here’s what to do!

No worries! There are still good options if you’re visiting for the day or staying outside the Old City. You can park outside the restricted zone and reach the Old Town by walking or using public transport.

Dubrovnik Center Parking is the best choice – just a 15-minute walk from the Old Town, with a nearby bus stop for quick and easy access!

How to know you’re near the restricted zone

The city has installed warning signs, traffic lights, and digital screens at key spots. These will let you know if you’re approaching the restricted area and whether your vehicle is authorized to enter. If you’re not on the approved list, don’t risk it – you’ll be turned away, and it could delay your plans.

Why did Dubrovnik introduce these rules?

This new regulation is part of Dubrovnik’s Historic Centre Management Plan, created with UNESCO guidance. The goal is to protect the Old City’s heritage, reduce daily traffic and pollution, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors. Many cities, like London and Stockholm, have introduced similar systems to reduce congestion. Dubrovnik is taking the same path, not by charging a fee, but by limiting entry to registered vehicles only. The result? A cleaner, quieter, and safer Old Town for everyone to enjoy.
